Motorcycles destroyed after a recent attack. Russia has now produced a survival guide (see below) for the poor schmucks who have to carry out these assaults / Screenshot

One of the odd things about this war is that so many people expected it to be over quickly. Most wars last for than a year. An awful lot last five years or more. Some continue for decades. Yet the conventional wisdom is that it should have finished long ago and I suspect that still influences public perceptions.
From late 2022 it was obvious that this war had entered a near stalemate. It’s now a war of attrition with no immediate end in sight. Outside an unforeseen event, Russia will almost certainly achieve no major breakthrough on the frontline. The same is even more true of Ukraine. Perhaps that’s why most journalists and their editors are content to report merely civilian losses from missiles and leave it at that. But then they often miss major stories that would better inform their readers. Sigh… welcome to The Under-Reported War.
Here’s some things you probably did not hear about this week.

BEHIND THE HEADLINES

The war of attrition on Russia is working.
Sanctions Status Quo: Russia Has Funds for at Least Three More Years of War, but Problems Loom
https://en.defence-ua.com/analysis/sanctions_status_quo_russia_has_funds_for_at_least_three_more_years_of_war_but_problems_loom-14796.html
“Russia's economy is grappling with a series of accumulating issues that could specifically hinder its ability to produce missiles and other weaponry used against Ukraine.”
——————————————
One million Russians casualties were claimed by Ukraine last week. It is important to remember that ‘losses’ includes not just the dead, but also missing, prisoners of war, severely wounded casualties, and the walking wounded. Those in the last group usually return to the fighting. Probably very reluctantly, hence the ‘crutch battalions’ we’ve seen.
When the war started, Ukraine’s daily tally was assumed by many to be inaccurate. However, it turns out Ukraine is fairly precise when it comes to this task. Multiple intelligence agencies have said Ukraine’s figures are more accurate than their own. If you stop and think about it, it makes sense. This is a war when drones with cameras are omnipresent. It is not too difficult for Ukraine to verify claims from its soldiers.

NEWS FROM THE FRONTLINE
——————————————
We’ve now hit the first anniversary of the “imminent fall of the strategic city of Pokrovsk”. This was last year’s media panic when it suddenly remembered there was a war with actual fighting going on. Pokrovsk IS a city but it’s a pretty small one. It is not ‘strategic’ because nothing much will change if it falls. Instead, Russia wants to capture it for political reasons because Putin wants to occupy the entirely of Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts so they can declare them ‘liberated’. So Putin has ordered they continue to attack. Pokrovsk might fall, but it will be at yet more enormous cost to Russia. And Ukraine will just retreat to the next line of defence a few kilometres away.
Russian Military Prepares For Summer Offensive Aimed at Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka
https://www.kyivpost.com/post/54234
“Russia has been trying to conquer Pokrovsk since the summer of 2024, but it has failed when confronting Ukrainian forces effective defenses, yet it hopes to take all the Donetsk region in 2025.”
——————————————
Russia has produced a survival manual for the desperate motorbike led assaults that usually end catastrophically for its troops. It does not make heartening reading for the bikers.
‘Race Or Die’: Russian Survival Guide For Mad Max Motorbike Assaults
https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidhambling/2025/06/10/race-or-die-russian-survival-guide-for-mad-max-motorbike-assaults/
“Russian assaults are increasingly relying on motorcycle troops to get close to Ukrainian lines. Sometimes enough troops make it to positions close to Ukrainian lines to storm defensive positions and gain a few more yards of ground. Generally though they fail, and either way most of the participants usually die – hence the need for tips to increase the survival rate.”
——————————————
Much was made of a Russian talking point four months ago about how good its army is at generating smoke to hide behind whilst attacking. This video shows how little even the Russian army has appreciated the revolutionary nature of drone warfare. Generating smoke just attracts the attention of surveillance drones and brings the inevitable blitz of FPV drones and artillery fire on the unit generating the smoke. Meanwhile, the drone watching overhead can look down and observe what is going on behind the smokescreen.
There is nowhere to hide on a battlefield any more.

THE DRONE & MISSILE WAR (LATEST INNOVATIONS)
——————————————
Innovation is driven not just by technology but also by the desire not to dependant on China for supplies of cheap drones. It’s working out well for Ukraine.
Ukraine Conducts Flight Tests of Indigenous Multirotor Reconnaissance UAVs
https://en.defence-ua.com/industries/ukraine_conducts_flight_tests_of_indigenous_multirotor_reconnaissance_uavs-14701.html
“The Ministry of Strategic Industries of Ukraine, together with the Unmanned Systems Forces Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, held an exhibition-review of the capabilities of Ukrainian multirotor reconnaissance UAVs, which are currently used at the frontlines of Russia-Ukraine war as an alternative to Chinese-made Mavic drones, which are widely used on the battlefield to perform various tasks.”
——————————————
Ukraine is far ahead in the race to develop robot unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). it has already deployed hundred to evacuate wounded from within the Drone Zone. And it has conducted small-scale assaults on Russian positions with a widening array of armed UGVs. At some time in the future Ukraine clearly plans to launch a major assault using purely UGVs and, most likely, autonomous FPV drones and loitering munitions. Doing so could well break the stalemate in the ground war.
Kamikaze UGVs Could Deliver Massive FAB-500 Bombs Straight into Russian Hideouts — Ukrainian Robot Systems Chief
https://en.defence-ua.com/news/kamikaze_ugvs_could_deliver_massive_fab_500_bombs_straight_into_russian_hideouts_ukrainian_robot_systems_chief-14732.html
“In an interview with ArmyInform, Yabchanka said a suicide UGV could technically take a 500-kilogram FAB-500 airbomb as improvised warhead and deliver the payload right into Russian infantry strongholds or trenches, bringing massive firepower into locations usually unaccessible to aerial drones.”
——————————————
Russia continues to make its own drone innovations too. This time it’s a fully autonomous loitering munition. It does, of course, contain American microelectronics.

Right now, there is no counter-measure to defeat fibre-optic first-person (FPV) drones. NATO’s newly opened drone training center in Estonia (see The Under Reported War 11) is now running tests with Ukraine to develop methods to counter this threat.
Ukraine and NATO to Test Countermeasures against Fiber-Optic Drones in Estonia Under Intriguing Limits

“Representatives of Ukraine and NATO plan to test drones and other technological solutions designed to directly counter Russian UAVs controlled via fiber-optic cables.”
——————————————
Much has been heard about Russia bombarding the cities of Ukraine with missiles. However, it is usually forgotten by reporters that Ukrainian engineers were an important part of the Soviet missile program. Ukraine has extensive experience in building missiles but designing and testing new ones so takes time. Now, after three years of war, Ukraine may have a counter to Russia’s Iskander ballistic missiles in the form of one of their own. It may even have ben used to destroy two of Russia’s SRBM launchers. This is very bad news for Russia. Ukrainian reconnaissance drones now dominate the skies and they have developed fast targeting procedures. Russia used to be able shoots missiles from deep behind the lines with near impunity. That is no longer true.
Ukraine’s Own Ballistic Missile Passes Combat Test

In May 2025, Ukraine successfully tested its domestically developed Sapsan ballistic missile in combat conditions. According to Valentyn Badrak, director of the Center for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Studies, in an article for LIGA.net, the missile struck Russian military target at a distance of nearly 300 kilometres, confirming its operational readiness.”

THE DRONE & MISSILE WAR (THE AIR WAR)
Russia, having lost so much of its modern artillery, resorted to glide bombs last year as its prime source of tactical bombardment. These are air-launched conventional bombs with wings and GPS-style guidance that glide to a target over the horizon. They are very effective and Russia has recently extended the range of their newest version. Ukrainian jamming has reduced their accuracy so instead of one-in-two hitting their target accurately only one-in-eight does. But Russia has so many more bombs in store, it hardly matters.
Ukraine seems to achieve near to one-in-one accuracy with its French built Hammer glide bombs but they are scarce compared to the sheer volume of Russian glide bomb attacks.

https://en.defence-ua.com/weapon_and_tech/umpk_pd_whats_known_about_new_russian_glide_bomb_of_95_km_range-14730.html
“Whereas the standard UMPK has an effective range of 60–80 km, depending on the launch conditions, the updated UMPK-PD can reportedly reach up to 95 km. According to the prosecutor’s office, the Russian military is currently field-testing these new variants, suggesting that the effective range may grow further.”

Ukraine now has FPV drone units that specialise in destroying Russia’s deadly Lancet loitering munitions and surveillance drones.

To reduce its reliance on missile-based air defences which are hindered by missile shortages, Ukraine is looking to expand the use of these FPV hunter-killer drones.

THE DRONE & MISSILE WAR (THE LONG-RANGE WAR)
——————————————
You won’t have heard much about this elsewhere but:
Ukraine’s long-range drones and (increasingly) missiles continue to degrade Russia’s military and defence industries. Fifty-eight separate targets were attacked in May. It is likely to be even higher this month.
Meanwhile, more detail has been revealed about the precision of the Operation Spiderweb attacks on Russia’s bomber fleet.
Completely under-reported was a near-simultaneous raid that destroyed an unreplaceable Mig-31K fighter. This is the only aircraft that can launch the Kinzhal hypersonic missile.
So many videos are posted online of Ukraine’s strikes on factories and refineries that some Russian regions now ban the practice.

EUROPE REARMS
I cannot emphasise enough how unlikely this week’s news ‘Europe Rearms’ would have been before the invasion of Ukraine.
Belgium, after decades of under-resourcing its military, continues to spend big. This time it’s buying ten NASAMS air defence missile batteries.
The UK will build more than the previously-planned number of hunter-killer submarines and, as a symbol of how seriously Europe is re-arming, opened a new steel forge to make the highly specialised barrels required for NATO-standard artillery.
Portugal is developing futuristic small submarines with the South Korean company, Hyundai.
The first of three Israeli-supplied Arrow 3 intercontinental missile defence batteries is about to arrive in Germany. This is the biggest news of the week. The geopolitical ramifications are immense.
